The live music will be held on the performance area of the Market Square. There will be lots of Stalls, including Retro and great food stalls.

So comes down bring the family and a great start to the Weekend, and don’t forget that Saturday 11th is the Velentines Day Market, so get down and buy something special for your loved one!!

There was a great selection of stalls, Fantastic Cheeses, organic meats, locally grown fruit and vegetables, superb speciality breads from Melton Mowbray. The Sneinton Community Cafe was in residence on the square, plus all the old stalls, bric-a-brac, household goods and much more.

Many thanks to all who came especially the Nottingham Local Food Partnership, who were instrumental in arranging for all the fantastic local organic food stalls.

Lots to look forward to at the Market over the next few weeks.

The Market Toby.

Today there was a group of about 25 young people using the square for their enjoyment, that’s great you may say, that’s what we want! However, the young people in question were skateboarders, using the all the new blocks to Skate on. This obviously has now damaged the blocks, and let me say 25 skateboarders can do a lot of damage in quite a short period of time.

When I got there, there was one local remonstrating with the skateboarders in a polite way, explaining the damage they were doing, but as they also explained, since the Broad Marsh skateboard park had been removed they had no where else to go.

I believe that the Council are shortly to be passing a bye law to prohibit the use of skateboards and bikes on the square, that with help from the Community Officers and Police should protect the Square. But the question from the young people is still a valid one, where can we go? If there are no proper provisions, for what after all is a far better recreation for them than staying inside playing on the PS3 or Xbox. Where will they go, if they cannot use the square, the Council should create a new park for them.

There is plenty of unused land in Sneinton and St Ann’s for either a community group or the City Council to put to one side for this use, tarmac or concrete,  some concrete blocks, a few sewer pipes, some benches etc will provide hours of fun, even better, why not ask the young people what they want, let them design in and then build it, with their help of course.

So let me get off my soap box , before some gangling youth skateboards along it.

So all those people who said, that they remember the market with 50 stalls or more, get down to the market and we can build on our success, don’t leave it until the next time, else there might not be a market. The more local people, the more local traders, the more people as so on.

Our free Santa was well attended and lots of children came away with a free toy and a smile. Wait ’til next year to see what Santa may bring!

Everything is going well for the planning of the grand opening of the Market on the 10th December 2011. We have so many enthusiastic community groups all getting involved such as the NLFG (Nottingham Local Food Group), Sneinton Alchemy to name a few.

All the Stall have been alllocated, but if you want to stand, you can join us the following week when we have a few Stalls remaining for the Christmas market.

The new web site is almost finished, this includes the new Sneinton Square Calendar so you can see when the markets are running and when special events have been planned. If a community group wishes to use the market square (on non market days) please drop us an e-mail at info@sneintonmarket.co.uk and we’ll see if we can book it for you.

The Web site will also include a listing of local businesses which will be free of charge, if any businesses which to have their own web site advertised we can add the link or if you want a full web page on our site we can do that too (for a small charge)!

Hopefully soon we can have a busy local area again, which will be great for all our local residents, our own local ‘Super Market’.

Today is a further step in the renaissance of Sneinton Market. We (that is Sneinton Community Traders, most local businesses and the City Council) have all put in lots of time, effort and money into this project. I am really looking forward to the 10th December (This year) when the market resumes its rightful place on the square. Over the past months I have been greatly encouraged by the number of groups wishing to get involved in the renewal of the market. I really believe that when the market reaches anywhere near its possible growth it will become a catalyst for the regeneration of the local area.

Not only have we plans to resume the Saturday and Monday Markets, but themed markets for Wednesdays and Fridays. The square is not just about somewhere for the Market to sit on, but to become a destination point for all local people, Sneinton and St Ann’s alike.  The Square should be a shared resource for the local communities, a place for Music events, Arts, Dance, festivals, the possibilities are almost limitless.

Now for the downside.

This is what is called the ‘Mastodon in the Room’ , and yes we all know what I am talking about. Yes, the burnt out units facing the square. The Units caught fire nearly over 4 years ago (April 2007), and since then nothing (physical) has been done. There has been many, many discussions between developers, lease holders and the City Council, but nobody seems to have the will to do something, it’s as if the powers that be just ran out of energy on  the last lap and said “oh well its only Sneinton/St Ann’s, it’ll do”. All this time and effort, not wasted, but it could have been so much more, Sneinton Market deserves more,  no it demands more.

It’s now down to the developers of the Units, if you want a return on the investment you have made in purchasing the buildings, spend a little bit more on tidying up the units, I don’t expect a full repair, but make them safe, replace the glass and paint the outside. There are enough local groups and businesses more than willing to clear the interiors and start to use them, you  would even start to get rentals.

Overall its a great time to be involved in Sneinton Market and I can see a great future for it. If you think about it a market is a great place to start a business, very low overheads and we are planning lots of market exposure, that helps your business and keeps the market growing.
